NBM governor: Moldovan Leu to get a new look
The National Bank of Moldova plans to give the Moldovan currency a new design within the next three years. The institution claims, however, that the project is technically complicated and that the banknote's design modification will take into account the opinion of the citizens.
"Many experts say: we want high-quality banknotes, durable ones, many countries are starting to use polymer – in Switzerland, the UK, we will use not only Romania's experience but also the experience from other countries. Perhaps we will have coins, various notes, not only the typical ones with Stefan Cel Mare on them, but with more differentiating elements," the Governor of the National Bank, Sergiu Cioclea, said.
Since 1999, the Romanian leu has been made of polymer. Banknotes made of this substance are two or even three times more resistant and are harder to forge. The first polymer banknotes were introduced in Australia in 1988.
