Harsh environment at makeshift school in Cigârleni village
Over 200 pupils from Cigârleni village, Ialoveni district, have to to attend classes in a local kindergarten, due to lacking a school. The library has been build in place of a few toilets while the canteen is arranged right in the middle of the hall. This situation begun three years ago, when the old Middle School building was declared too dangerous and evacuated, but since then the works for building a new school were stopped due to lack in finance.
Pupils from Cigârleni are sharing the building with 80 preschoolers. The classrooms were improvised from 6 former bedrooms.
"There is no place for the children to walk, to play. I do not even wish to talk about our library and canteen", headmaster of the middle-school, Petru Ţurcanu declared.
Having two shifts, some children leave in the late evening and are fed twice per day in a canteen arranged in a hall.
"On those 30 square meters, 40 children can eat. Window sills are used as benches, since the hall is too narrow for us to put real ones, without loosing the ability to walk by", Ţurcanu shared.
Even books are misplaced, being set in a former toilet, due to not having a library.
"The situation is very bad. We keep books in various toilets", headmaster of the middle-school mentioned.
"This stall is a bit bigger, it is four meters wide and one meter sixty centimeter tall, but not enough for children to walk in a pick a book", librarian Alexandra Pletosu said.
Children also claim that it is harsh for them to study in such environment:
"This building is impossible. It has only two halls, one of which is a makeshift canteen".
"Its hard, we barely fit in, having to put more tables to do so, but who wished to learn studies".
Back in 2014, 10 million lei were invested in the construction of a new school. Since then, due to lack of money only the walls were build and in order to finish it another 17 million lei are required.
According to the regional Mayor, the Council of Ialoveni District allocated 3 million lei for finishing the roof.
"Somewhere in a week, the work on the new school will begin again, namely from the roof. Once that is done, we can say the building is saved", the village's Mayor, Grigore Duplavă declared.
"We are searching for finances. We addressed the government, our development partners, the nearby districts, hopefully by next year we will gain most of the money", President of Ialoveni district, Anatolie Dumitriu concluded.
The new institution is meant for 320 pupils.
