surgery
Very complicated surgery at the backbone was performed in Chisinau. A 14-year-old girl suffering from grade 4 scoliosis was treated with the implantation of two types of state-of-the-art devices.
The operation lasted eight hours and was performed free of charge, thanks to a collaboration between two German physicians and specialists from our country.
Anastasia Screpcova is from Bălţi and suffered from inborn scoliosis. She says she has suffered terrible pain over the years and was limited in movement.
"It hurt my back very hard, I felt uncomfortable, I could not do the simplest moves. At school it happened that it hurt my back and sometimes let me go home," says Anastasia Screpcova, a patient.
"We have deformity at the thoracic level, which continues with the compressive lumbar. As these deformities during the last period, a year and a half progressed rapidly, it was decided to go to surgical treatment," said Andrei Usatâi, head of the vertebrology department.
The surgery involved correction of the spine by implanting minimally-invasive last generation devices. These will adjust with the growth of the body.
"We see a correction of the previous, post-surgical deformity with sub-laminar hooks in the thoracic segment and the lumbar transpendicular screws. In the lumbar segment we have six screws and in the thoracal segment new sublamination hooks," added Andrei Usatâi, head of the vertebrological section.
Such an intervention costs over 20,000 euros in Europe. For this child, the operation was free, thanks to a charity that paid for the device. The intervention was performed voluntarily by a group of doctors from Germany and physicians from the Traumatology and Orthopedic Hospital.
"The exchange of experience has benefits and we are always for the exchange of experience," said Andrei Usatâi, head of the vertebrology department, in this case.
Only seven days have passed since the surgery, and Anastasia says she has forgotten the old problem. The girl will be discharged in the next few days. Its recovery will take a few months, and then it can lead a normal way of life.
"After surgery, one day I was in bed because it hurt my back and now my shoulder bumps because it's right, but the doctor said it was normal, I felt a freedom because my waistline, what I did before. I look at myself in the mirror and see a straight back, "says Anastasia Screpcova, a patient.
Representatives of the Traumatology and Orthopedic Hospital say that such interventions have been carried out for over 20 years. There are up to three interventions per year, but modern technologies make them safer.
They say that thanks to the established collaborations, they could perform at least one operation per week. Today, four other minors are being investigated for similar treatment, and some Moldovan residents are undergoing a free specialization course in Germany.
