BĂSESCU VS DODON. Chisinau Court started to review Basescu's file
The first session in which the trial between the head of state, Igor Dodon and the former President of Romania, Traian Basescu, was held today.
The case is investigated by the Chisinau Court. Basescu's lawyer says the decision of citizenship withdrawal was formed on a political basis. On the other side, Dodon's lawyer denies the accusations.
Traian Basescu's lawyer presented some videos of a TV show, where Igor Dodon comments on Basescu's citizenship withdrawal.
"These declarations prove Basescu's citizenship was taken on a political basis. The citizenship withdrawal didn't take place at the initiative of some competitive authorities as SIS or Internal Ministry, but at the President's initiative", said Andrei Bivol, the lawyer of Traian Basescu.
Basescu's lawyer considers Dodon made this gesture to forbid the former chief from Cotroceni to participate at the Parliamentary election from 2018. Igor Dodon's lawyer denies the accusations. He says that within reviewing the Moldovan citizenship, Traian Basescu was under penal searches in Moldova and our legislation forbids citizenship giving in these cases.
"Basescu didn't tell the Moldovan authorities he is under penal searches, because he wouldn't have received the citizenship this way", said Maxim Lebedinschi, the lawyer of Igor Dodon.
The former President of Romania received the Moldovan citizenship in June, 2016. At the beginning of 2017, Dodon retired it and the Cotroceni leader sued him. Till the Court will give a verdict, the Moldovan citizenship of the former Cotroceni leader is suspended.
