Police in Quintana Roo say the victims were taken into care at various hospitals.

Firefighters and other emergency crews working at the site rushed to extinguish the fumes while tending to the bloodied passengers, according to CNN Espanol.

The ferry was reportedly docked at the time of the incident, a preliminary report said.

The ferry was en route to Conzumel from Playa del Carmen at the time of the incident.

Investigation is currently underway to determine the origin of the explosion.

Some reports say it may have occurred as a result of gas accumulation.
