Unionist rally from Chisinau gathered thousands of people from both Moldova and Romania
Thousands of people from Moldova and Romania have gathered today in the Great National Assembly Square to participate in the event organized to mark 100 years since the union of Bessarabia with Romania.
The event was peaceful, but law enforcement arrested over 20 persons who wished to cause chaos. Participants came to the Great National Assembly Square for a rally.
It begun with the hymn of Republic of Moldova being sung, then of Romania.
"I wish from the bottom of my heart for a better life in Moldova and hope it will soon once again be part of Romania"
"I came here for two reasons: to celebrate the Union and state my wish for those two countries to reunite."
"We came from Galaţi and Bucharest. We couldn't miss this event."
Among those present there was also a man with the flag of USA.
"For me USA is the perfect example of democracy. USA helps Romania and I believe they will help our countries to reunite."
Still, some young men did not know what the event was all about.
"Why did you came here today?"
"To commemorate this union...which will take place on March 27, when 100 years will be marked since the Union."
Unionist deputies request Chisinau and Bucharest to convoke a common meeting and sign a declaration, recognizing the Union of Bessarabia with Romania from 1918.
"We wish for Republic of Moldova to unite with Romania" organizer George Simion declared.
"-How many people came to the event? -100 000 people", George Simion mentioned.
According to the police though, there were only around 7 000 people. While the event went without a hitch. Law enforcement managed to arrest a group of provokers.
According to law enforcement, the young men were heading to the Great National Assembly Square. In the backpacks, officers found medical masks, antigaz, knuckle dusters, knives and bats.
"A group of 21 men, dressed in tracksuits, wearing masks, backpacks and covered hands were heading to the crowd. Police managed to arrest and isolate them. In their backpacks were found bats and other forbidden items" IGP deputy chief, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc said.
At the end, participants danced Hora of Unity.
So far, 130 settlements from Republic of Moldova have signed a symbolic declaration for union with Romania.
