The University of Tiraspol from Chisinau, could be merged with the "Ion Creanga" Pedagogical University in order to make the expenditures more efficient.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Monica Babuc, who said that the reform of the higher education institutions is in progress, although some rectors are against it.
"The Tiraspol Pedagogical University from Chisinau, which works for 20 years and has two or three faculties, it was only natural to be absorbed by a single pedagogical university and it is not known whether it will be absorbed by the USM" , said the Minister of Education, Culture and Search, Monica Babuc.
The announcement was made at a minister meeting with several students, who were unhappy with the fact that there are too many universities in the country. Monica Babuc said that now the requirements for accrediting higher education institutions are harsher.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of students has fallen by 30 percent in the last five years. If nearly 104 000 students were enrolled in the 2011-2012 school year, nearly 75 000 people are were enrolled this year.
