EU supports reforms in Moldova banking system
Over 100 representatives of banks, bank associations, audit companies, ministers and experts of the European Banking Authorities from the Netherlands and Romania, development partners and other people interested in the banking sphere participated at the "Reforms of the banking system" training, organized by the Mission of the High Councils of the EU in the Republic of Moldova, in cooperation with the National Bank of Moldova.
Peter Michalko, the chief of the EU delegation in the Republic of Moldova highlighted the importance of the reforms in the banking system to provide the financial stability and people's trust after the bank crisis. The Ambassador appreciated the progress of the National Bank of Moldova in establishing a modern surveillance system, that fulfills the EU standards. This will help Moldova solve the crisis and fulfill the responsibilities regarding the International Monetary Fund and the EU.
The official highlighted the role of the banks as a catalyst of the economic activity of the country. Also, Peter Michalko mentioned that the EU will continue to support the National Bank of Moldova to realize reforms in the banking system, due to a new project, Twinning, that will be launched in order to strengthen the surveillance on the financial system and the management.
The Governor of the National Bank, Sergiu Cioclea appreciated the EU support in implementing the banking reforms. He mentioned that the banking system was changed and people have more trust in it now. According to him, almost a half of the banking system's stakes belong to the European banking groups.
At his turn, Aldona Jociene, the High Council of EU in the banking system said that the reforms will permit to identify the problems and risks within the banks and will make possible the surveillance measures. The EU Council highlighted that they encourage the efficient dialogue between the foreign and national audits.
