Republic of Moldova will benefit of Council of Europe's assistance

Within her working visit to Strasbourg, Justice Minister Victoria Iftodi held a meeting with Thorbjørn Jagland, the General Secretary of the Council of Europe. During the meeting, the two officials discussed the situation in the Republic of Moldova, the reforms implemented in the justice sector and the assistance provided by the Council of Europe of our country.
The Minister of Justice informed the European official about the current situation of the Republic of Moldova, the progress in the reform of the judiciary and honoring the commitments assumed by our country upon accession of the Council of Europe, as well as the measures taken in the fight against corruption in the field of human rights.
In particular, they discussed the progress made in the implementation of the strategic directions for action in the judiciary, underlining the importance of the Council of Europe's expertise in the process of legislative creation.
Victoria Iftodi greatly appreciated the long-standing partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe and thanked the Secretary-General for valuable assistance, in particular through the Partnership for Good Governance of the CoE-EU for the Eastern Partnership countries in the period of 2015-2018.
The two officials appreciated the current implementation of the CoE Action Plan for RM 2017-2020 and cooperation programs dedicated to protecting and promoting human rights, ensuring social rights, strengthening the rule of law and ensuring democratic governance principles.
The Justice Minister said that a new long-term strategy in the field of justice is currently underway. In this context, Victoria Iftodi stressed the importance of the Council of Europe's assessment of the implementation of the Justice Sector Reform Strategy for 2011-2016, ensuring that the recommendations of the evaluation mission will be translated into the new strategy.
The Minister of Justice also called for intensified efforts to ensure the full enforcement of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, especially those of the Transnistrian region. The parties appreciated the importance of increasing confidence between the two banks of the Dniester and the need to foster dialogue.
In turn, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland expressed his satisfaction with the political will to bring positive changes to the process of modernization and democratization of the Republic of Moldova and ensured that he would support our country's efforts in this regard. Also, referring to the ECtHR decisions in the Transnistrian region, Mr. Jagland has expressed his commitment to supporting their implementation.
