4,500 pairs of shoes representing lives lost in Mideast greet EU FMs
A campaign group on Monday unveiled a display of 4,500 pairs of shoes in Brussels, one for every Palestinian life lost in the Middle East conflict over the past decade.
The display was set up near the European Council building, where EU foreign ministers are meeting.
Avaaz, a citizen campaign group, collected the shoes from around Europe.
Avaaz campaign director Christoph Schott said that the project was about "standing up for humanity" and not "about one side against the other".
Schott said that the aim was to show EU leaders that "people in Europe care what happens in Palestine, they care what happens in Gaza" and that "enuogh is enough".
The EU meeting comes at a time of tensions along the frontier between Gaza and Israel.
More than 110 Palestinians have been killed in weekly protests that began March 30 and are aimed at lifting an Israeli and Egyptian blockade of Gaza imposed after Hamas seized power in 2007.
Hamas has vowed to continue the rallies.
Israel says it is defending its border as well as its communities nearby.
It accuses Hamas of trying to carry out attacks under the cover of protests.
