The number of tobacco consumers dropped two percent since the entry into force of the smoke-free law in 2016. At the same time, in the first five months of the year, the number of smokers in prohibited areas decreased by 35% compared to the same period last year. The data were presented the Parliamentary Committee on Social Protection, Health and Family sessions. The authorities say that people are becoming aware of the dangers they pose when they smoke. However, there is still much work to do on this topic.
"There are still about 150 booths around the educational institutions", said Aliona Serbulenco, State Secretary of the Parliamentary Commission for Social Protection, Health and Family.
The Ministry of the Interior claims that since the law came into force, nearly 13 000 people and 153 companies have been sanctioned.
"There have been applied contravention sanctions which resulted in the payment of fines to the state budget amounting to 4 million 420 thousand lei. The current year, the first five months we recorded a decrease of 35 percent, fewer violations," stated Anatolie Danila , the head of MAI Directorate.
At the same time, more and more Moldovans turn to the green line and ask for help to quit smoking.
"There are more addresses coming from hardcore smokers who smoke two, three and more packages a day. The success rate is over 85 percent," said Mihai Oprea, director of the Republican Narcology Dispensary.
The authorities do not exclude that more drastic measures will be taken to combat this vice.
"Even the incidence of tobacco, the incidence of smoking is high and all our efforts have not yet reached that goal we want to reach. We will not escape any time to strengthen our efforts and improve the quality of life of all," concluded Valentina Buliga, Chairman of the Social Protection, Health and Family Commission.
According to a OMS report, about six thousand Moldovans die annually because of tobacco-related illnesses.
