National Language Day is celebrated all over the country today
The Romanian language is the official language of our country for already 29 years. At the end of August 1989, over 70 thousand participants at the National Great Meeting voted for this language to be the state language of our country.
Starting September 1, 1989, the pupils learn the Romanian language, instead of the Moldavian one. In 1994, the Parliament voted the No.13 article of the constitution where it was mentioned that "The state language of Moldova is Moldavian, written with Latin letters".
Then, the scientists tried to change this article, but they failed. The communists said they are against changing this article. Thus, in 2002, 2004 and 2008, people organized protests to change this article.
In 2013, the Constitutional Court decided that the text of the Independence Declaration where the Romanian language is mentioned, is more important then the text of the Constitution. For already five years, the Romanians celebrate this holiday on August 31.
