The pace of recovery of money from the Savings Bank, the Social Bank and Unibank has grown 2.5 times in the second quarter compared to the first three months of this year. According to the National Bank, the three banking institutions collected 112.5 million lei. Since October 2015, since the banks have remained unlicensed and by the end of June 2018, they have recovered more than one billion lei. The three banks are also due to the National Bank with 13 billion lei.
Currently, 150 lawsuits are under way in the courts for the recovery of 4.6 billion lei. Criminal Investigation Bodies also manage almost 50 files with 34 billion lei, ie 2.6 times the debt to the National Bank. There are also enforceable titles worth ROL 15 billion. Another 3.7 billion lei is due to be repaid by debtors in insolvency.
"The Robbery of the Century" took place during 2007-2014. An investigation by Zeppelin journalists showed that "Bilateral" and "Russian Laundromat" are two operations of special services in Moscow, and the one who handled the whole process is Veaceslav Platon, known as the number one raider in the CIS. It was detained in Kiev in July 2016 after it was given international search by the Moldovan authorities.
In April 2017, Plato was sentenced to 18 years in prison for scam and money laundering in particularly large proportions in the fraud case at Banca de Economii. At the end of last year, he also received 12 years of jail for scam and active corruption in a file for insurance companies. Among the beneficiaries of stolen money in the banking system are former Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Orhei Mayor Ilan Şor.
