In the period 2012-2017, 7,174 cases of drug intoxications were reported in the Republic of Moldova. In order to prevent these incidents, the authorities have launched an information campaign with the generic name of Children's Health Without Chemical Risks, MOLDPRES informs.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, the campaign runs from 10-15 September. Within this framework, the specialists of the National Public Health Agency, together with the heads of the Public Medical Sanitary Institutions and the heads of the Territorial Education Directorates, will carry out thematic information and communication activities on the prevention of intoxication in schools, will participate in public discussions, trainings, radio and TV, press information, thematic debates in communities.
According to the National Public Health Agency's data, drug intoxications are most common, followed by cosmetics. In rural areas, pesticides (fungal insects), racemic remedies (poison for mice) and plant toxins are more commonly reported.
Most acute poisoning with drugs, pesticides, detergents and other household chemicals is attained in 1-5 year olds - the age at which hand-to-mouth reflexes are developed very well. However, in cases of intoxications of children up to 1 year old, these are mostly caused by inappropriate medication by parents.
According to statistical data, during the period 2012-2017, in the Republic, in children up to 18 years there were 7,174 cases of intoxications with different chemicals: drugs, alcohol, pesticides, gases, nitrates, acids. The highest number (1742) of such intoxications was registered in 2015.
