Prime Minister Pavel Filip showed indignation to some employees of the Customs Service who do not work conscientiously. The head of the Executive referred to a case in which a customs inspector would have imposed a citizen to pay a customs duty of 900 lei for clothes worth 2,600 lei that he had bought from Romania for his two girls. According to Filip, this is not about smuggling.
"I received a letter from a citizen returning from Romania by train, with clothes for his two girls: 29 pairs of stockings, 15 t-shirts, 8 pants and 5 pairs of shoes. The amount of 2,000 lei was imposed to pay the fee of 917 lei. Why did he need to pay if it does not exced 300 Euro as the Customs Code states that it can be the value of the goods that a person may enter the country as a right of personal use. At the discretion of customs officers, he was qualified as a trader.
I know that Customs is also connected with the Border Police. This man crossed the Moldovan border twice this year. I do not understand this attitude and there are upsetting when the arrows go to Customs. I do not think this is smuggling. Let's not fight people, I understand that they have this possibility for those who have duties in customs, but to do our job and find the money where millions are flowing. Do not be afraid of people who bring clothes to their children", said the prime minister.
In the context, Pavel Filip was mad because of the response received from the Customs Service on this case and requested an investigation.
"I was shocked by the answer received from the Customs that the customs inspector can not be sanctioned, being warned not to admit such cases. My opinion is that such characters do not have the right to work in the Customs Service. Do not choose the easiest way to beat people to show you how strong you are, I ask for an investigation, Mr. Grigore Ionitov, and return the money to this man",concluded Pavel Filip.
According to the law, the customs duty does not apply if goods are imported in the country for personal use but also if the value of the goods does not exceed 300 Euro.
