Power stations for electric cars installed on the main urban routes, solar renewables palm trees, PET collection stations, an online platform for civic participation of the citizens of Chisinau, are some of the activities to be carried out by the "Sustainable green cities for Moldova" between 2018-2019. The initiative is implemented by UNDP Moldova and financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The activities will be carried out in partnership with UNDP Moldova's Innovation Laboratories, development partners, entrepreneurs and national / local authorities. "I welcome the launch of this project to meet the challenges associated with the inherent phenomenon of urbanization. It is a project above all for the citizens of the city.
The initiatives part of this project will be conceived and developed with the people living in Chisinau and in partnership with the private sector and civil society", said Interim Mayor of the Capital, Ruslan Codreanu.
"Green City Lab, to be set up in this project, will provide opportunities for testing the concept of the city itself as an urban transformation lab, where local authorities act as engineers of change and ensure collaboration with the private sector and citizens to test and experiment new solutions in response to the existing challenges that prove to be successful will be replicated and expanded", said Stefan Liller, UNDP Resident Representative Moldova.
The urbanization phenomenon calls for the rethinking of public services and urban infrastructure so that they are centered on the comfort of people in the city and, last but not least, be environmentally friendly.
The project encourages innovative pilot initiatives that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions through efficient waste management measures, energy efficiency in residential buildings, renewable energy use and smart urban planning. At the same time, Chisinau municipality will be assisted in planning the urban mobility, involving the population and the private sector in extensive consultations and thematic debates.
The project "Sustainable Green Cities for Moldova" has a total budget of 2.72 million USD, of which USD 2.64 mln granted by GEF and USD 80.000 by UNDP Moldova. Half of the Moldovan population will migrate to cities by 2030.
The influx of new residents will be felt especially in Chisinau, which will host over 50% of the entire urban population of the country by 2030, which will increase the pressure on infrastructure and services, while creating considerable social challenges and the environment.
