Moldova loses 8.6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product due to smokers. According to a study by the World Bank, employees with such a vice are more ill-willed and have a much lower job yield, and therefore suffer both them and the country's economy. To discourage smoking, World Bank experts are proposing to raise excise taxes on this product.
The opinion of foreign experts is also shared by us. They believe that smoking shortens life expectancy.
"In fact, there are three clear things: the first is that because of smoking we have death and the life of the citizens is much shorter, but that this has an influence on GDP and three, the most important is that our health care system everyone even healthy has increased expenses due to those who are addicted to smoking", said Veaceslav Ionita, an economic expert.
Sociologists say that the passion of the Moldovan people for this vice is drawn from the Soviet Union.
"Smoking during factory production is a practice that has come since the Soviet Union and was formed in the army when the army said we all go to smoke organized", said Andrei Dumbraveanu, a sociologist.
Not all smokers, however, share this view and say that labor performance depends on other factors.
"How good is the atmosphere in the office to get a high return. Finally, many people smoke because there are some stressful situations", said a man.
"It may decrease the labor rate, but at the same time we smoke cigarettes and pay the taxes, the excise tax on the cigarettes, and there is already an income in the country and I do not think it's a problem, it compensates somehow", mentioned another smoker.
"I think productivity has nothing to do with smoking because they mostly smoke at breaks or leisure time", said another man.
