On the day of parliamentary elections in February, a referendum could be held to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 61 and the possibility for citizens to withdraw the mandates of deputies who disappointed them. Moldovan Democratic Party Chairman Vlad Plahotniuc announced this, during a weekly briefing after the party's meeting.

"At the meeting, we discussed with colleagues about the organization of this plebiscite in this regard, and in the past days the necessary legislative changes were made in order to organize the referendum on the same day as the parliamentary elections in February.

I asked my fellow Members to prepare Parliament's decision on the holding of the referendum to be voted in the near future so that the institutions in charge of the organization of the elections have the time to organize this plebiscite well", announced Vlad Plahotniuc.

PUBLIKA.MD recalls that a recent study by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers shows that Moldovans want an optimal change in Parliament by reducing the number of deputies. Ask if there is a need to reduce the number of electors in the Legislature, over 72 per cent of survey respondents answered affirmatively and only 13 per cent of them did not consider it necessary.

Moldovans will be called to the polls at the end of winter to elect the new composition of the Legislature. MEPs decided that the parliamentary elections would take place on 24 February 2019.
