Rehabilitation works at Jewish cemetery from Chisinau. Synagogue will be repaired
The Jewish cemetery from the capital could become an open-air museum or historical cultural center. A project to be developed by the Monumental Inspection and Restoration Agency, who also wants to rebuild the tombs and repair the synagogue in the center of the cemetery.
Meanwhile, there are sanitation works. According to Ion Stefanita, the director of the Monumental Inspection and Restoration Agency, among the tombs there was no more general cleaning for more than 50 years. "After the cemetery will be rehabilited, it would be cleaned of the whole wood, it would be worked on the project sketch, and a draft was made for how this cemetery will be arranged in perspective" , said Ion Ştefăniţă, director of the Monumental Inspection and Restoration Agency.
The forint in the cemetery caused the dissatisfaction of nearby residents, who were indignant that a portion of the cemetery fence had been demolished. The authorities explain, however, that the measure was necessary and authorized.
"The unpleasant situation with the neighbors is repeated last year, because even when we needed to evacuate the waste we had the mayor's mood to open that gate and to evacuate the waste even if the neighbors were revolted", said Ludmila Botan, the head of Funeral Services. The works are also supported by the Jewish community. "According to the Jewish tradition, the territory of the cemetery belongs forever to the dead. For us there is no such thing as a cemetery, where nothing is built, only cleaning is done, the leaves are squeezed, the trees cut and the graves rise have fallen", said rabbi Daniel Samson.
In October, Prime-Minister Pavel Filip called for an action plan for the redevelopment of the Jewish cemetery from Chisinau. The prime minister also proposed the construction of a Jewish historical cultural center in which the victims of the Holocaust will be commemorated and will be an attraction for tourists. The Jewish cemetery has an area of 12 hectares, and there are over 40,000 graves and monuments on it, some of 300 years old.
