Government approved antisemitism definition
The World Congress of Jews appreciated that the Republic of Moldova's Government adopted the definition of antisemitism.
The working definition of antisemitism, adopted at the plenary meeting of the International Alliance for the Memory of the Holocaust, was approved today at the session of the Government.
The purpose of the decision is to promote anti-discrimination and tolerance policies towards minority groups and to identify ways to combat various manifestations of antisemitism, discrimination and intolerance.
Adopting the definition will also provide a common framework for addressing the issue of antisemitism at national and international level.
Thus, the Republic of Moldova joins eight other states that have accepted at national level the working definition of antisemitism: the United Kingdom, Israel, Austria, Romania, Germany, Bulgaria, Lithuania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, but also the European Union. At the same time, the definition was also agreed by other IHRA member states.
It highlights that antisemitism represents a certain perception of Jews, which can be expressed as hatred against the Jews. The verbal and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed against Jews and non-Jews and / or their properties, against the institutions of the Jewish communities and their religious sites.
We mention that last year the Executive approved the decision to set up the Museum of Jewish History of the Republic of Moldova and at the initiative of Prime Minister Pavel Filip the Jewish cemetery in Chisinau will be rehabilitated and transformed into a Jewish cultural and historical center
