Andi Cristea addressed to Federica Mogherini: "How does the EU cooperate with Chisinau authorities"
PSD MEP Andi Cristea, President of the European Parliament Delegation for Moldova (D-MD), on Wednesday, February 13, addressed a letter to the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU Federica Mogherini on the Parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova, scheduled on February 24, 2019.
The MEP referred to actions to combat Russian influences in the electoral process in Moldova, requesting information on the cooperation of the European Union's diplomatic service, and in particular the East Stratcom Task Force, with the authorities in Chisinau preventing the involvement of external actors in parliamentary elections.
In this context, Cristea stated that "numerous sources of trust in the political, diplomatic and media worlds have confirmed the existence of a strong and sustained disinformation campaign as well as the involvement of the Russian Federation in the electoral process in Moldova". Moreover, the Romanian MEP stressed the preparations of the European institutions and the EU member states to combat the possible involvement of Russia and other non-state actors in the European elections this spring.
Andi Cristea chaired the meeting of the Delegation for Moldova in the European Parliament Wednesday, having as main topic the parliamentary elections in Moldova. During the meeting there was an exchange of views on the electoral campaign in Moldova, as well as a video conference with the representatives of the European External Action Service, attended by members of the electoral delegation delegation from the European Parliament at the elections from February.
At the end of the meeting, the Romanian MEP stated that "The outcome of the Parliamentary elections will be decisive for the future of Moldova and will influence the nature and intensity of this country's relations with the European Union. During the electoral process, the European Union has launched various signals on the importance of free and fair elections in line with democratic standards. That is why it is natural to ask how the EU authorities actually support the Chisinau authorities in this process. Joint efforts to combat propaganda and external influences in Moldova must be sustained and ambitious and eventually serve as a model for the May European elections".
