The students of the "George Meniuc" Theoretical Lyceum in the Capital have the most modern pool within the educational institutions in Chisinau. After more than 20 years, as long as it was inoperative, the pool was renovated after Chisinau City Hall offered almost six million lei. The basin complies with all quality standards and has all operating permits. Besides, children have locker rooms, showers, and are constantly supervised by a doctor and a coach.
The pool has 60 square meters and a depth of 1 meter and 10 cm. Weekly, one of three lessons of physical education, pupils of 2nd to 4th grade spend swimming at the pool.
"-Swim with your arms before!
-We train, swim, diving.
-It's better than physical education lessons, we've learned to swim with our backs and so on. It's better and healthier".
-I've taught a colleague to sit upright and upright. It's better here".
The water in the pool is periodically filtered so as not to endanger children's health. Now, around 400 children swim here, but by the end of the month a new schedule will be planned so that more children can swim the pool.
"Swimming improves the respiratory system, the central nervous system, the lungs, but also the heart. We teach them here from scratch, we are already able to swim, but for those who can not have rafts, mattresses, balls that help us to develop them", said Adrian Zghibarta, coach.
The headmaster of the high school claims that in the future the pool could also be attended by the students of other educational institutions.
"At the moment only the students here are attending, it could only be possible for children who have health problems and the doctor has prescribed them to swim, so it would be possible to work with the children in the neighborhood", said Nicolae Babuc , director of the George Meniuc Theoretical Lyceum.
At the balance of the Education Department within the City Hall, there are about 20 pools. Only three of them work, one at kindergarten 225, another at kindergarten number 32, and third at Nicolae Gogol Highschool. The rest does not work because of deplorable conditions.
"We want to start re-investing in the pools. The maintenance costs of the pool are 1.3 million lei per year.We have already allocated this year for everything that means maintenance, payroll, staffing. It is also a medical center for children if they need it, all the conditions, the children and the coaches are happy", said Ruslan Codreanu, interim mayor of Chisinau.
Totally, 1,200 children are taught in the George Meniuc High School from the Capital.
