La Strada condemns the way Ziarul de Garda involved the biography of Gheorghe Petic's victims in an investigation
La Strada center condemns the way Ziarul de Garda journalists denigrated the victim who was assaulted by Gheorghe Petic. La Strada representatives mention that this is grave that such a subject is used in somebody's political interests.
"Each journalist must know that the victim's job, family condition, whether he has or no children has nothing to do with the investigation of a sexual assault. Moreover, such an interpretation can lead to discrimination against a child who normally needs to be protected from any harmful information", it was mentioned in the declaration of La Strada International Center.
La Strada reminds the journalists that it is a very sensible thing to present such a case in the press, as it might disturb his future:
"The editorials written on this topic that come to blame the sexual assaults only discourage the victims."
Recently, Ziarul de Garda published an investigation which says that Gheorghe Petic's victim is guilty of that incident. Moreover, they wrote that the woman likes to party and goes to the fancy clubs of the town.
Gheorghe Petic was sentenced to three years and six months behind bars. The former border policeman should pay a fine worth 30 thousand lei for sexual assault.
Gheoghe Petic was convicted for assaulting a woman from Ungheni. The surveillance camera registered the moment he entered the victim's house, while his clothes had biological samples belonging to the woman.
