Schools shutdown due to small number of students against high expense to maintain
Many schools in the country will be closed after September 1 due to small number of students against high expense to maintain these institutions. Ones of schools will be in Pohrebea, Mărcăuţi of Dubăsari district. The decision was made by district Council following Education Ministry consultation.
For instance, gymnasium in Mărcăuţi has capacity of 300 pupils but only 30 children remain in the first grade classes. Pupils of 5th - 9th grade classes will have to study in another school in Holercani village, 15 km far away, by bus the authority initiated.
According to the institution headmaster, the expense to maintain this school reaches 600,000 lei per year. After optimization, six professors have to look for new jobs.
"They have offers from other neighboring places", said Alexei LEahu, mayor of Mărcăuţi, Dubăsari.
PDM deputies already requested the hearing in Parliament of Education Minister regarding the school optimization this year which was rejected by parliamentary majority ACUM-PSRM.
During 2012-2015, when Maia Sandu was the Education Minister, around 130 institutions were closed. In 2017, Education Minister instituted moratorium over school optimization at the request of former President of PDM, Vlad Plahotniuc.
