A man from Briceni was sentenced to 18 years in prison for robbery and murder, committed on his own neighbor, according to regional.md.

The murder was committed on the morning of 5 November 2016 in the village of Bezeda, Briceni district.

The defendant broke into her neighbor's house, asking her all for the money coming from her daughter sent from abroad sometimes.

At the woman's refusal, the defendant struck her with extreme cruelty, and in order to hide the traces of the crime, she burned her home indoors, causing her deadly injuries and fatal burns.

Immediately after the murder, the 25 year old defendant left the country, being announced in search.

It was detained in about one year by the authorities of the Russian Federation and extradited in the spring of last year to be held criminally liable in the Republic of Moldova.

Prosecutors, who have requested life imprisonment for the defendant, are announcing that they will challenge the first-instance sentence, which they hold too gentle for the deeds committed.
