Academics back uninominal voting
The citizens want an honest political class, with MPs mobilized to work for solving society’s problems, and this goal may be achieved only by introducing the nominal voting.
The opinion is shared by academics, who staged debates on changing the electoral system. They say it will enhance the law-makers’ independence and their communication with the citizens.
The scientists maintain the new system must also lead to reforming the political parties.
"The party leaders must promote their personal interests, must not have prevalence over the other members who are MPs," said the academician Valeriu Cuşnir.
The bill on uninominal voting was submitted to the Legislature and sent to the Venice Commission.
According to most recent polls, 70 % of the Moldovans stand for the uninominal voting system and the percentage is higher within the Diaspora.
