Alert issued towards beekeepers in Moldova after over 2,000 bee families died at once last week
A warning has been issued to Moldova beekeepers. Last week over 2,000 bee families from bee yards all over the country suddenly died at once.
Beekeepers guess they were poisoned. The contamination source could be chemical substances used to spray trees in orchards that were blooming during this time.
Specialists from National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) say that their inspectors are investigating two cases in Ialoveni and Ungheni. Several million bees died in the past week in these regions.
"There are symptoms of poisoning. He falls, loses strength and doesn't move. He's struggling for few days before dying", said ANSA expert.
This phenomenon started in bee yard of Anatol Dubnic in Şicovăţ village, Ungheni last week. The beekeepers holding nearly 20 beehives is a young beginner. He dreams to create his own bee business. But everything ruined in just 40 hours, all 10 bee families died at once.
"I had to wear a mask to protect me from bees. They become very aggressive recently. The reason is obvious. Around 80% of total bees died which accounted over 500,000 bees", said Prime TV reporter Nicolae Boico.
This beekeeper admits losing nearly 20,000 lei.
According to legislation, anyone who plan to treat orchard trees are obliged to announce authority at least 7 days in advance. These procedures can't be performed during pollination period as it can affect bees which are collecting yellow powder.
ANSA expert says it seemed farmers fail to respect this law which causes bee deaths from year to another.
More than 7 thousand beekeepers are registered in the Republic of Moldova. Last year, around 15,000 bee families in the country died of unauthorized chemical spraying onto orchard trees.
