Bomb disposal unit offered lessons on dangers of unexploded munitions
Bomb disposal soldiers offered lessons in schools from Străşeni, about the dangers of unexploded munitions in Republic of Moldova, as well as how to act when stumbling upon one.
The action was taken within International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
According to chief of Bomb Disposal Unit, Adrian Efros, soldiers explained to pupils from Mihai Eminescu Lyceum and Mihai Viteazul Gymnasium how to act when they find explosive, as well as the risks such items posses.
Adrian Efros mentioned that each year, the bomb disposal unit of the National Army are finding and destroying hundreds of explosives. 98% of them are dating back to the Second World War, while the other 2% from the Transnistria War.
The source mentioned that only last year, around 900 explosives were found in Moldova, most being found in Ştefan Vodă, Căuşeni, Cantemir, Soroca, Orhei, Anenii Noi and Ungheni.
UN declared on December 8 2005, through the resolution 60/97, that April 4 will be named International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
Local authorities and citizens of Republic of Moldova are urged to take proper actions when they discover explosive.
Taking into consideration that most explosives are found by locals during agricultural works, soldiers warn that people should not touch any explosive they find, especially children. In such situations local authorities must immediately request for groups to be dispatched to the zone.
Regardless its age or state, any munition pose a threat and might explode. Therefore, it is advised for only the bomb disposal unit to execute any works.
Since 1992 and to this moment, explosive caused a total of 23 people to pass away, while another 26 were injured. Among them also counted children, seven having been killed and another three injured.
