Christians celebrate today Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, Roman soldiers who were killed for their faith.
After going to the church, people from multiple villages from the North respected the traditions passed down from their ancestors:
"It is a big holiday, but we are not allowed to eat fish."
"In the past they used to grab a net and go fishing."
People claim that on this day people must drink 40 cups of wine to honor the 40 martyrs. While according to an old tradition, men from Cubolta village, Sângerei district, go fishing. Only this year, the snow became a headache.
Priests claim that those traditions are considered pagan.
"Those 40 cups are somewhat frowned down upon, because in all days of the Great lent, only on a few days people can drink wine freely" priest Vitalie Bibica, Moara de Piatră village said.
According to popular believes, on the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste days ends Baba Dochia.
