Moldovan local authorities save as much as two million lei ($100,000) by using unpaid work of sentenced people.

600 people have provided such community services from the beginning of this year.

However the figures drop year on year. In 2016, the number of these sentenced people fell 36 %, down to 2,700 people. 

156 of them declined to work without remuneration and opted for more severe sentencing.
