Crisis in Education. Moldova could remain without teachers
Although education is a national priority, the education system continues to face a deep crisis of teachers. According to the Ministry of Education, at the start of the school year 1,252 teachers were missing in gymnasiums.
As in previous years, the authorities have relied on pedagogical institutions graduates, but there are few willing to link their future with the school.
Of the nearly 2,000 graduates and pedagogical colleges, only 799 have expressed their willingness to be engaged at educational institutions. For now, the Education Ministry has no data on how many of them have signed employment contracts. For example, in Hincesti town only 37 young people have registered out of the 110 vacancies.
Elena Mariniuc is one of the seven young professionals who has agreed to work in Hincesti town. The young woman said that she was dreaming to become a techer since little girl.
Currently, the salary of a starter teacher is 2,950 lei. And young people who go to work in villages benefit from a 30,000 lei salary and reimbursement of expenses for rental housing. However, these conditions seem not to be good enough.
At least six thousand pensioners in the country operates in primary and secondary education institutions in the country.
Currently, the average age of teachers is 50 years. To attract young specialists in schools, authorities propose to increase wages and to motivate them to stay. A new formula based on performance indicators could be introduced.
