Drought destroyed farmer's hope of rich harvest
The lack of rainwater from the past two months are creating issues for farmers. Despite hoping for a rich harvest, such thoughts became dim now.
Mihal Bejan from Costești, Râșcani, has sowed 150 hectares, but due to the drought only 50% of the seeds bore fruits.
"In our region, especially near Prutului, was more than enough rain water. Now I need to sow seeds from other cultures, such as wheat and autumn barley", the farmer said.
The farmer also declared that this year he has less harvest than expected:
"I have lost in some areas such as sunflowers, soybeans and corn. There were some field from which I could gather only 3 800 kg, while nearby, across the road I have collected only 1 800 kg."
The Hydro- Electric Power Plant from Costești, Râșcani district are in a pinch. The water level in Costești-Stânca lake has dropped by 50%, which reduced its work capacity by 80%.
"We cannot work at our full strength, as there is not enough water", administrator of the Hydro- Electric Power Plant, Vasile Cojocari stated.
According to meteorologists, between 1st August- 20th September, 10% of lands from Moldova were affected by dire drought.
