Fines to increase by five times for drivers who do not prioritize cyclists and pedestrians
The fines for drivers who do not prioritize cyclists and pedestrians will increase by five times. The law foresees the sanction for such beaches to be increased from 300 lei to 1 500 lei. The initiative belongs to National Patrol Inspectorate and will following be forwarded to the executive for approval.
Cyclists from the Capital often favor to go through parks, claiming that some drivers are aggressive and put them in danger.
A man recalled how one day, while cycling, a driver cut him off: "I was slowly going uphill, because it is difficult, and a driver started yelling at me to get off the road."
Meanwhile, other cyclists hope that once the fine will increase, less people will breach the law:
"Drivers must be more responsible, because it is our safety that we speak of. I am a driver myself and understand that a cyclist is at a disadvantage."
"When I see a speeding driver I stop, better safe then sorry."
"A cyclist is more vulnerable in traffic."
According to the project, if after being sanctioned, the driver will one again ignore the law, the fine will rise to 3 000 lei.
Despite this, drivers greet the initiative claiming that it will increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
"Order must be done! If a cyclist is going according to the law, I must give him priority."
"Many accidents happen because of this. When you see pedestrians at crosswalks, you must stop."
"If they are respecting the law, you must prioritize them."
The project's authors claim that the fines are meant to reduce the number of accidents implicating bicyclists and pedestrians.
"In order to educate the drivers in this area the fines will be raised. This action will unfold by patrol officers" deputy chief of public relation service, Pavel Apostol explained.
According to the National Patrol Inspectorate, throughout 2017, over 200 lives were lost in car accidents, while another 2 600 people were injured.
