French diplomat: Moldova's Free Trade Agreement with EU is not to Russia's loss
The Free Trade Agreement with the EU does not hinder Moldova’s trade relations with other countries. The statement was made by the French state secretary for European Affairs, Harlem Desir, on his trip to Chișinău.
The diplomat said the European officials wanted Moldova closer to the European community, however this should not be to the detriment of Moldova’s trade with eastern countries, including Russia.
"We regret the sanctions imposed by Russia. The Free Trade Agreement hinders in no way Moldova’s capacity to have trade agreements and relations with other countries. They are to the benefit of both Moldova and Russia," Harlem Desir said.
He stressed Russia must also make steps ahead.
Moldova’s Association Agreement with the EU, and its compartment – the Free Trade Agreement – will enter force as of July 1, but the provisions of the documents have been valid since 1 September 2014.
