Government searches for solutions regarding water insurance for soil irrigation
Work meeting at the Government. Prime minister Pavel Filip has requested the identification of solutions for the insurance of agriculturists with water for the soil irrigation.
At the meeting were present the minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, minister of Environment, the president of the Academy of Science and leaders of the profile institutions.
The prime minister asked for a constructive approach and to come with good solutions. At the same time, Pavel Filip has requested to be presented real data regarding the available surface water and ground water quantities, its quality, and its ulterior impact on the soil quality.
According to the information presented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, actually in Moldova are approximately 50,000 hectares of orchards, grapevines, vegetables and greenhouses that need to be irrigated.
The creation of possibilities of using ground water in irrigation, in a controlled and dosed way, would allow agriculturists to develop their businesses and to have a constant production, including in the droughts period.
At the same time, during the meeting, the representatives of Ministry of Environment and Academy of Science have pleaded for a more intense exploitation of the water from rivers, lakes, and those accumulated during rain.
According to the existing studies, ground water has a high level of mineralization, and for them to be used in irrigation, agriculturists need to have special filters, which are expensive. The usage of ground water with a high level of mineralization, without prior filtration, destroys the soil quality.
The prime minister has asked from responsible authorities to present updated information regarding the water that can be used in irrigation by agriculturists, and to elaborate a detailed Working plan, with defined terms, in order to offer to agriculturists the possibility to modernize their irrigation infrastructure and to have access to sufficient quantities of water.
