Government to tighten up regulations on grocery food
Frequent intoxications and expired products have led the authorities to review the legislation. The government has approved a bill that regulates general hygiene requirements in grocery food.
The document provides a set of rules on food preparation and storing. For example, ice will have to be produced from drinking water and the steam should not contain harmful substances.
"We can not say anything at the moment. It is just a harmonization, an adjustment based on some European standards," said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Vasile Luca.
Changes do not scare the store owners.
"It's nothing unusual at all. Anyway, we're happy to abide by such rules, at least we have an unique document to know and apply requirements", said the president of the Association of Restaurants, Aneta Zasaviţchi.
Compliance with the rules will be verified by the Public Health Center and the National Agency for Food Safety.
"Our duties include the medical control of the employees and we will very strictly check that all employees in the food sphere have medical control," said CSP Chişinău, Luminiâa Suveică.
Consumers feel optimistic about new regulations.
"It's definitely great as everybody reserves the right to eat safely".
"How many times I have heard of children got sick from eating in kindergartens. How many times the checks were conducted and expired food was found. Nothing unusual here."
In recent raids, law enforcement officials have found products expired or without origin acts in several stores.
In the first six months of 2017, there were approximately 430 cases of salmonella.
