Harvesting period of cereals lengthened this year
The recent rain falls have prolonged the harvesting period of wheat, barley and pea by one month. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year's production will be lower due to the drought at the beginning of summer, which has not allowed these crops to grow as they should.
So far, farmers have gathered 98 percent of all areas planted with wheat - over one million and 20 thousand tons of grain. The quantity is 230 thousand tonnes less than last year. Also, about 95 percent of the fields sown with barley and peas were harvested.
So far, about 162 thousand tons of barley and almost 32 thousand tons of peas have been stored in the barns. Instead, farmers managed to gather all rape from the fields.
This year, the crop is well above that of 2017 and represents 108,000 tonnes. Data also show that farmers have raised an average of 3.2 tonnes of wheat per hectare, half a tonne less than last year. Also, less barley was harvested, ie 2.7 tonnes per hectare. Rapeseed production per hectare is slightly increasing, and the pea harvest has fallen by just over a tonne and is 1.45 tonnes per hectare. However, experts say there is no cause for concern.
"Productivity declined by 0.1 tons per hectare in wheat and by 0.2 tons per hectare for barley it has grown. It's about the average of the last five years, which is a big fear and concern," said Vasile Sarban, head of Directorate, Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of next week, the wheat, barley and peas will be harvested.
