Jonathan Eyal: What happens in Eastern Europe will have an impact on the whole continent
Experts and officials from EU and USA discussed at the Inter-parliamentary summit "Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and current security challenges", held today in Chisinau and declared that it important to consolidate the defense capacity and security in the region.
Jonathan Eyal, Associate Director, Strategic Research Partnerships, and International Director, at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), declared that nobody is against Russia, but only against its influence in the region: "What is happening in Eastern Europe is very important to maintain the security in the whole Europe. Today's event is the beginning of a process consolidating security in Europe"
Ambassador Alexander Vershbow spoke of the risks ties with Russia's arsenal from the region. He states the need to continue defense reforms in the Black Sea zone and consolidation of Defense capabilities of those three countries.
Former Defense Minister of Georgia, Tinatin Khidasheli, considers that progresses in terns of overcoming security challenges in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine cannot take place without political will from authorities.
On another hand, Ukrainian deputy, Iryna Friz claims that only if Russia will withdraw its troops from those three countries, will conflicts from the region be solved. According to her: "We must be united and act together to gain regional security."
Eugen Carpov, former negotiator for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, deputy, declared that: "Destabilization in the region, military intervention, aggressive propaganda, financial embargo are Russia's new doctrine in relations with Republic of Moldova". According to the official, Transnistria is constantly receiving foreign financial and political support.
At the event will gather close to 150 officials and renown specialists, including Presidents of Parliaments, Members of the European Parliament and representatives of United States Congress, as well as well known local and international experts.
