Less people suffering from mental illnesses are being placed in asylums. Due to reforms implemented by authorities, in the past 5 years, 3 000 people received help in community centers or at home, avoiding therefore any breaches to their rights and separating them from the society. This subject was discussed within a sitting of the Parliament's committee on health, family and social protection.

Last year, the state spend daily 260 lei on each ill person.

"Those decreasing numbers do not mean that patients no longer receive treatment, but that less people receive stationary care, which is considered unfavorable for patients that can receive care while remaining with their families" secretary of state for Ministry of Health, Rodica Scutelnic explained.

Specialists believe that isolating ill people from the society must be left as last resort. There are 40 rehabilitation centers for those whose illness does not stand in the way of a normal life. To finance those institutions the state offers each year 25 million lei.

Still, the biggest problem remains lack of qualified professionals. In 12 districts from the country there are no child psychiatrists and due to small salaries, most specialists leave abroad.

In Moldova, 78 000 people suffer from mental illness. Most of them. close to 46 000, are men.
