Lithuanian politician: Mixed electoral system offers a chance to those who are trusted by the people to reach the Parliament
Lithuanian politician, Kęstutis Masiulis, who offered in Vilnius an exclusive interview for Publika TV, declared that the mixed electoral system offers a chance to those who are trusted by the people to reach the Parliament. According to the official, the decision of authorities from Chisinau to use this system will contribute to the political development of the country.
In Seimas there are 141 deputies, 71 being chosen through the mixed electoral system and another 70 by the parties. Deputy Kęstutis Masiulis claims that his country's experience shows that in the mixed electoral system, people are chosen based on their actions and not declarations.
"People usually chose a candidate who worked for their welfare. Why not vote for such a person? It could be even a renown journalist, a teacher or a doctor" Kęstutis Masiulis said.
According to Kęstutis Masiulis, the mixed electoral system create equal chances to both representatives of big parties, as well as of smaller ones.
"This will contribute to the country's political development. I greet those steps, because I believe, it will allow the existence of not only two groups or parties, but more" Lithuanian politician said.
At the same time, Kęstutis Masiulis believes that Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius criticized too harshly the decision taken by authorities from Chisinau: "When Auštrevičius criticizes you, he is committing a mistake. It is too harsh. I cannot speak on this matter, as I do not know his arguments."
The Parliament of Chisinau has brought into force a law on the transition to the mixed electoral system, being voted by over two thirds of the deputies, after months of debates. Therefore, from 101 deputies, 51 will be chosen through the mixed electoral system, while 50 by the parties.
