The Ukrainian authorities cancelled the idea of building six hydro power stations on the Dniester River, as it was stipulated in a Governmental project drafted in 2016. The decision was taken within the bilateral commission, composed by experts from Chisinau and Kiev regarding the development of the Dniester River.
According to the state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, Valentina Tapis, this is the result of a periodic interpellations made in Chisinau.
"This is the position of the Ukrainian side. The declaration of the Ukrainian party was recorded in the minutes that were signed by both co-chairmen of the commission and is to be fulfilled".
At this event, the sides agreed on an international expertise to determine the impact of the Novodnestrovsk Hydro Power station on the Dniester River. The latest study of this kind happened about 40 years ago. Repeated analysis will cost nearly half a million dollars. The study will be carried out by the end of this year.
"What is wanted is being done now, it is elaborated the study of the impact of the whole precess. The financing comes to the Government of the Republic of Moldova from the Embassy of Sweden and the beneficiary is the UNDP Moldova".
Earlier, Moldovan experts found that in the last ten years, the water level in the Dniester has decreased by up to 10 percent. The fault would be the three hydro power stations belonging to the Ukrainians, which use almost 80 percent of the volume of water. The next meeting of the joint Moldovan-Ukrainian commission for discussing the problems of the Dniester River ecosystem will be held in October.
