Odd phenomenon: Strawberries start ripening in garden of Grătieşti village
Odd phenomenon in Grătieşti village, Chisinau. Strawberries began ripening in the winter, not in the greenhouse, but in the garden. However, this could lead to fewer fruits in the spring.
The one who noticed this was god-daughter of Cocieru family when she walked in through the garden.
Nadejda Crâşmaru photographed the strawberries and posted the pictures on a social network. The pictures became immediately viral in just few minutes.
The woman said she never had seen before ripe strawberries in mid-January.
"We're so surprised to such a magic in the winter. Usually we eat them in March. We will not harvest but leave them there", said Chisinau local, Nadejda Crîşmaru.
Corina Cocieru, the youngest daughter said her family often used fruits to make jam, juice as well as cakes. She hoped to taste the first strawberries in March.
"It's the first time I've seen strawberries in the winter. If they start growing now, I think they will soon ripen", said Corina Cocieru.
The expert says the sudden temperature drop could affect the harvest.
"This phenomenon of strawberry flowering in January is an abnormal one which could be explained by the climate changes", said Gheorghe Postolache, a specialist in Phytogeography and Forestry.
According to the State Meteorological Service, the weather will be determined by the high air pressure in the coming days. Temperature between -12 and -7 degrees Celsius will be expected at night. Up to -1 degrees Celsius will be forecast at the daytime.
