Organic farming is an advantage for Moldova. Over 90 farmers are growing organic crops
The European market greatly lacks organic produce, having only 20% covered.
As a result, over the past few years, more and more farmers are growing organic produce. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 62 local farmers are certified, while another 30 are in the process of gaining a license. 80% of the organic produce grown in the Republic of Moldova ends up on the European market.
For four years, Mihail Gașper from Furceni village, Orhei, grows peas, lentils, chickpeas, oats - less widespread crops. The farmer believes that those are the plants with most perspective.
"We have three hectares of lentils and 60 hectares of peas. We also have 30 hectares where we grow corn. All this produce is sold abroad. In the Czech Republic, France and Germany. The price is by 1.5-2 times bigger then here" farmer Mihai Gașper said.
Few know that organic plants can greatly contribute to the soil quality.
"It would be a perfect solution to prepare the soil for new plants. I would keep my soil healthy, would make it rich with nutritive elements. At the same time, it would be a good way to save some money" farmer from Orhei Irina Pompuș-Mura said.
Foreign experts claim that the culture of consumption of organic products should also be developed among Moldovans.
"The demand for such produce grows in Europe. People understand that they are advantageous for health. Therefore, they include ecologic produce in more food. We will continue to promote this type of agriculture in Moldova" International Expert in Organic Farming, Veronika Semelkova said.
Since last year, Ministry of Agriculture increased by 20% subventions offered to those who grow organic produce.
"Organic produce is the type of products that will allow us at the moment to increase the value and efficiency of the agri-food sector in Moldova. Chickpeas, peas, lentils. Those products have a bigger value than wheat, corn, sunflower" Secretary General of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Iurie Ușurelu said.
At the moment, organic crops are grown on about 60 thousand hectares.
