Painting by Romanian Adrian Ghenie sells for record USD 9 mln in London auction
Romanian Adrian Ghenie’s Nickelodeon painting sold for USD 9 million (GBP 7.1 million) at the Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Auction organized by Christie’s in London, Romania-Insider informs.
The painting had a starting price of USD 1.29 million – USD 1.94 million (GBP 1 million – GBP 1.5 million).
The Romanian artist thus doubled his previous record. In February this year, Ghenie’s painting Sunflowers sold for USD 4.5 million at a Sotheby’s auction in London. Before that, the Romanian sold a painting for USD 2.43 million.
Another painting signed Adrian Ghenie was sold for USD 433,070 (GBP 341,000) during Christie’s auction organized on October 6. The artwork, named The Surgeon and His Soul (Study for Kaiser Wilhelm Institute), had a starting price of USD 194,550 – 259,400 (GBP 150,000 – 200,000.)
Adrian Ghenie, 38, was born in Baia Mare, a city in northern Romania. He has graduated from the Art and Design University of Cluj-Napoca, and now lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, Berlin, and London. He is one of the most appreciated young painters in the world.
