Superior Council of the Magistrature will examine the sentence given to the councilman from Corjeuţi village, Briceni district, who killed a child in a hit and run. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who spoke with Justice Minister, Victoria Iftodi. According to Prime Minister, the Government will also soon examine a new project on sanctions for drunk drivers.
"I respect judicial independence, but there are cases where you do not need to have studied law to know that something is unjust. Such incidents pushes us to complete the justice reform. With my colleagues, we are preparing to change the law, where drunk drivers will be more severely punished" Prime Minister explained.
Pavel Filip declared that at the moment, the legislation in this field offers certain freedom to judges and prosecutors, which must be changed. Recently, magistrates from Edineţ Court, Briceni office sentenced councilman Iurie Groza to 3 years and 2 months with suspension, the prosecutor's having appealed the decision.
PUBLIKA.MD reminds that the tragedy took place on February 25 2018, on the main streets from Corjeuţi village, Briceni district. While drunk driving, the man hit a 7-year-old child, who was walking with his mother.
After the crash, the minor passed away on site, while the suspect continued on his way home, where he parked the car and went to sleep.
Shortly after the crash he was arrested and placed in preventive detention at the request of prosecutors.
Test have shown that the suspect had a blood alcohol content of 2,40 g/l.
