Prime Minister Pavel Filip and UN Secretary General António Guterres discussed today the reform of the UN peacekeeping architecture, with a focus on conflict prevention. The Prime Minister appreciated that in January 2018 these conflicts, including the Transnistrian conflict, were included in the list of UN priorities.
In June this year, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that qualified both the foreign military presence and the imposition of political conditions for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops as contrary to the international law and constitutional neutrality of the Republic of Moldova. A new point in the agenda of the current session on "Withdrawal of Foreign Military Forces on the Territory of the Republic of Moldova" was registered last week.
Pavel Filip mentioned that the withdrawal of the military forces from the eastern region of the country will help solve the Transnistrian problem: "We will appreciate your support in setting the UN's attention to the Transnistrian conflict and the withdrawal of foreign troops to prevent conflicts and to maintain peace."
The Secretary-General said that the UN understands the Republic of Moldova's concern for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and the withdrawal of foreign troops from the territory of the country and will support the efforts made in this direction. At the same time, António Guterres has positively appreciated the partnership between the UN and the Republic of Moldova and expressed his thanks for supporting the reforms initiated within the Organization.
At the end of the meeting, Pavel Philip invited the UN Secretary General to visit our country in the context of a visit to the region.
