President Klaus Iohannis offered on Tuesday a congratulation message for 100 years since the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, where he spoke of "political gesture and patriotism" and "the hardships, threats and dangers, which Romania faced to protect Bessarabia", wrote digi24.ro.
"We celebrate today 100 years since the Union of Bessarabia with Romania. The decision taken by National Council in Chisinau was not only a political gesture, but mark of patriotism from all those who worked to make it a reality. It is one of those moments that defines history, warms the souls and awakens our spirits, generation after generation" wrote President Klaus Iohannis.
The official also mentioned that in 1918 Romania faced grave military situation and was exposed to a complicated international context.
"Despite all the threats and dangers coming from neighbor countries, without waiting to be rewarded or setting conditions, Romania defended Bessarabia. Through democratic projects and economic reform in the Government of Romania from 1917, the union from March 27 1918 meant that Bessarabia did not only reached the aim pursuit by Romanians from both banks of Prut, but also that it had a prospect for a brighter future" mentions the message quoted by News.ro.
Klaus Iohannis claims that politicians from 1918 proved that they fully understood the opportunity presented by the history and international context, to reach the aspirations of Romanians.
"One aspect that all great personalities of Romania over the past century had, was that they all reached their aims by associating our project with great European processes. It was the same during the World War, as in the year of the Great Union, when Bessarabia reunited with Romania" President Iohannis declared.
