Republic of Moldova will be ready to face floods. The Government approved to reform the national system for managing, preventing and reducing the consequences of floods, in accordance with EU legislation.
The document contains a number of measures that need to be taken to protect the people and localities from the negative impact of floods.
Among the included actions counts: creating a flood risk map, a plan to manage risks of floods in Dniester and Prut, creating a national system to monitor and forecast, as well as implement automatic systems of warnings in case of dam burst.
At the same time, the protection dams located at Dniester and Prut, as well as smaller rivers will be rehabilitated. In Republic of Moldova exists nearly 60 dam chains with a total length of over 1 000 km, that protects over 95 000 hectares and 93 settlements.
Other measures includes elaborating a national strategy for medium and long term flood risks. Also, in order to cover possible damages, insurances will be promoted in risk zones.
The grade of exposure to floods in Republic of Moldova is of 40%, in some regions the number reaching to 80%. A total of 659 settlements are at risk, as well as over 100 000 people. The latests floods that caused significant damages took place in 2008 and 2010.
