Samsung Gear S3 launched, ready to take on Apple Watch 2 with waterproofing and rugged look
Samsung's next smartwatch will come with GPS capabilities and the ability to call or text for help by triple-tapping a side button.
The new Gear S3, which runs Google's Android Wear software, retains the circular design of the current S2 model, but is slightly larger.
Samsung will still sell last year's S2 to those who consider the S3 too big.
As with the S2, the outer ring of the watch face rotates to let you scroll through notifications and apps.
Interface improvements include the ability to accept or reject calls with the outer ring rather than a swipe of the screen.
The S3 will come in three flavors, including one with cellular capabilities.
Prices will be announced closer to the devices' availability later in the year.
'With the Gear S3, we continue to build on our wearables heritage of offering diverse choices to enhance consumers' unique lifestyles,' said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Wearable Business, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics.
'With smart capabilities and sophisticated, elegant design, the Gear S3 marks a significant addition to our smartwatch portfolio.'
Samsung announced the new watch lineup Wednesday at the IFA tech show in Berlin.
