Speaker Candu comments on Venice Commission's recommendations
The Venice Commission has made multiple technical and legal recommendations to change the electoral system. And the Chişinău authorities have committed to fully implement them.
The statement has just been made by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu on the Chișinău Airport in the wake of a sitting of the Venice Commission.
"We’ll act as we have promised to the citizens and as their majority want. Certainly we’ll take into consideration the recommendations of the Venice Commission to improve the bill. It’s our commitment that we’ll fulfill. But what matters for us is our promise and the will of the majority of citizens," he said.
PDM leader Vlad Plahotniuc had recently stated the authorities will consider the expertise of the Venice Commission on the move, with entire openness.
The draft meant to change the voting system provides that 50 legislators should be elected on party lists and 51 directly, in constituencies. It was passed with 74 votes out of 101 in the first reading.
